Biographical / Historical

In 1973, the University of Northern Iowa received grant money with plans to start up a second radio station, KUNI on 90 FM. The decision was made to abandon the established university radio station, KHKE on 88.1 FM, leading to cost savings that would be lost when switching to a larger station. KUNI reached an audience of 80 miles around the radio station tower, and was created with a general audience in mind. Early in the station’s life, broadcasts featured Iowa folk artists, call-in panels, and UNI football games. The station quickly evolved to covering live music festivals, holding review shows of on-campus and off-campus entertainment, and holding their own musical events.
