Scope and Contents

The Kent Johnson papers, dating from 1973 to 2019, consist of records created, accumulated, and used by Johnson during his time working in Continuing Education & Special Programs. The materials are a mix of handwritten notes and typewritten documents. The papers provide insight into the courses offered, initiatives and goals undertaken, and overall functioning of the Continuing Education & Special Programs office during this time period

There are brochures, fliers, workshop informational materials, course programs, masters programs, and more. Some of the materials are noted as either “final” or “draft.”

There are also a variety of administrative files, including: drafts for off-campus credit programming; strategic plan documentation; correspondence / memos; notes; committee and study group materials; reports; State Extension and Continuing Education Council files; and information about credit programs (instructor, location, etc.). Files about the Iowa Communications Network are present throughout the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Kent Johnson worked in the University of Northern Iowa Continuing Education & Special Programs department for nearly 30 years. He was hired as a Program Coordinator in 1993 before serving as the department’s Associate Director and Acting Dean. Johnson was named the Dean in 2011. During his tenure, Johnson oversaw Continuing Education’s growth and evolution from a largely independent study role and extension courses to a broader use of technology and online course delivery. He retired in August 2021.
