Scope and Contents
Mr. Wagner collected books for many years. He was most interested in nineteenth and twentieth century botanical material, Midwest history, modern fine press publications, and modern world history. The retirement party photographs offer a good look at Rod Library staff members in 1994.

Many items housed in the Rod Library Special Collections & University Archives, including unpublished images and manuscripts, may be protected by copyright, publication rights, trademarks, or model release rights which the library does not own and for which the library cannot grant permission or licensing. Materials currently under copyright are usually still available for research and limited reproduction under Fair Use laws. However, it is the sole responsibility of the patron to determine whether or not their use of a given material falls within Fair Use guidelines and to obtain permission for said use from the rightful copyright owner.

Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the University of Northern Iowa assumes no responsibility.
Biographical / Historical
Edward Ferdinand Wagner was born and raised in Menomonie, Wisconsin. He received his academic training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire. He served in the United States Army in Germany. Following military service, he taught at Viroqua (Wisconsin) High School for a year. He joined the library staff of the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) as a reference librarian in 1958. He served in that capacity, with special responsibilities for Documents, Archives, and Interlibrary Loan at various times during his career, until his retirement in 1994.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Following Mr. Wagner's death, his estate administrators allowed Rod Library staff members Katherine Martin and Gerald Peterson to select books and papers from Mr. Wagner's house. The collection of papers was quite limited, but many books were subsequently added to the Rod Library.
