Department of Technology Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 14/15/01

Scope and Contents

The Department of Technology Collection consists of materials dating from the early 1960s to the mid-2010s. It is divided into two sets of materials: those that were in the collection prior to 2019 and those that arrived as part of a large acquisition from the department in 2019.

The pre-2019 materials date from c. 1964 to the 1990s and contain a variety of ephemeral content, such as brochures, publicity materials, and departmental newsletters, as well as administrative files including departmental meeting minutes, proposals for buildings, courses, and programs, etc. This grouping of materials also includes film reels and slides.

The 2019 acquisition contains materials dating from c. 1975 to 2014. The materials are similar in nature to those acquired earlier and are arranged into the following groupings: Promotional materials, Photographs, and Administrative Records.

The promotional materials consist of brochures, fliers, booklets, and magazines / publications largely focused on promoting the department and its mission, courses, and degree program offerings. The photographs include those of faculty, the industrial technology building, conferences, and classes / lectures.

Finally, the administrative records contain a mix of departmental-related and university-wide files. Included are departmental program proposals; building plans / blueprints for the industrial technology center; departmental policies and procedures; enrollment information (for both the university as a whole and at the department level); and Office of the Registrar data. Also note that some of the files contain handwritten annotations and notes. This is especially true for the “Schedule of Classes” booklets that were retained, which tend to be marked up with corrections and updates.

Please see the inventory for more specific information about the collection’s contents.

Biographical / Historical

The Department of Applied Engineering & Technical Management was created c. 1904-1905 as the Department of Manual Arts at the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). Its initial programs were established to create opportunities for students and graduates to gain hands-on experience. This mission continues to the present day, with the department adapting to changes in the field, including providing the hands-on experience to address both educational and industry needs for those graduating from the department. The department includes both undergraduate and graduate programs and also includes the Metal Casting Center and Foundry 4.0 Center.

Since its establishment, the department name has changed over the years: Manual Training (1903-1904); Manual Training and Domestic Science (1904-1907); Manual Arts (1907-1909); Manual Arts (1909-1922); Art and Manual Arts (1922-1935); Arts (1935-1947); Industrial Arts (1947-1966); Industrial Arts and Technology (1966-1975); Arts (1975-1991); Industrial Technology (1991-2012): Technology (2012-2022); Applied Engineering & Technical Management (2022- ). As such, materials in the collection will reflect the department name from the time period in which they were used and created.
