Biographical / Historical

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa has existed in some form since the university's founding as the Iowa State Normal School in 1876. It has undergone various name changes since then including the Mathematics Department (1876-1909, 1911-1922); Mathematical Department from 1897-1909; and the Mathematics and Commercial / Commercial Education Department, when it combined with the Commercial Department (1922-1937) before the two were separated again in the late 1930s. Upon university designation in 1967, the Department of Mathematics was placed in the College of Natural Sciences until 2011, when the college structure was reorganized and mathematics became part of the College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences. The department also had a brief merging with Computer Science from 1982 to 1991 as the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Department.
