C.W. Lantz Papers
Scope and Contents
The C.W. Lantz papers are undated but more than likely from Lantz's time at the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). The majority of the collection consists of typed and handwritten publications, writings, and other notes created by Lantz, as well as a small handful of radio scripts for ISTC radio broadcasts.
Examples of writings / publications include copies of Lantz's Ph.D. in Botany thesis, "Respiration in Corn with Special Reference to Catalse"; "Wildflowers of Iowa"; a handful of handwritten poems; "The Individual-Laboratory Method vs. the Demonstration Method in the Teaching of College Biology"; and "Some Observations of a College Instructor upon the Biological Fallacies held by Freshmen Students".

Biographical / Historical
Cyrus W. (C.W.) Lantz was born in Brooklyn, Illinois, on June 27, 1889. Earned his A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, where his major field of study was botany.
Prior to arriving at the University of Northern Iowa (then the Iowa State Teachers College), Lantz taught in Illinois high schools and was an Assistant Professor of Botany at the University of Nevada-Reno. He came to UNI in 1921 and in 1947 became head of the Department of Science. Lantz retired in 1957 but taught part-time for ten more years.
Lantz was involved in many professional and academic organizations, icluding Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, Beta Beta Beta, the National Association of Biology Teachers, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, and the Botanical Society of America. Lantz was additionally a fellow at the American Association for the Advancement of Science as well as the Iowa Academy of Science, of which he was president from 1942-1943.
Outside of his professional career, Lantz was a Cedar Falls Rotary Club member and on the board of the Cedar Falls Public Library.
Lantz passed away on September 10, 1979.
