Lawrence John Eilers Papers

 Collection
Identifier: 14/12/02/02

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of material associated with Professor Eiler's teaching, research, and professional interests. The extensive material relating to Professor Eiler's work on Iowa vascular plants might prove useful to researchers interested in continuing that work.

There is also a good body of correspondence, arranged chronologically, relating to Professor Eiler's responsibilities at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. There are good files of correspondence to and from his professional colleagues relating to his ongoing research interests, especially his work on the vascular flora of Iowa. Professor Eilers kept the letters of some of his more frequent correspondents in separate files. But there is also a general file that includes both these frequent correspondents and many other correspondents. Professor Eilers maintained friendly relationships with many of his professional colleagues. Formal letters about scientific nomenclature often include informal notes about Professor Eiler's personal life.

The collection includes photographic slides that Professor Eilers used in his teaching and research. Some of the slides are well-labeled; most are not. Professor Eilers apparently took most of the images on the slides himself. University Archivist Gerald L. Peterson maintained the labeling of Professor Eilers in the processing of the photographic slides.
