Scope and Contents

This collection contains assorted materials related to women's intercollegiate athletics, primarily at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). The materials date from roughly 1969 to 1978. Included are UNI athletics schedules, an October 1978 "Planning for New Department Structure" information, and assorted pages from a history of women's athletics at normal schools. Additionally, there are two photographs, a January 1967 issue of Sokol Gymnast/American Sokol, and guides for doing American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance oral histories.

Biographical / Historical

Carol Cooper was a professor at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Services (now the Department of Health, Recreation and Community Services), as well as its precursors, from 1972 until her 2009 retirement. She received her bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in 1961, master's degree from Smith College (1966), and her doctorate of education from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in 1975. Prior to her tenure at UNI, Cooper taught at Southern Illinois University. In addition to her teaching duties at UNI, Cooper was the head women's swimming coach from 1974-1980. She was also heavily involved in the Iowa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, receiving its Distinguished Service Award in 1992. Cooper passed away in April 2019.
