Scope and Contents
Box 1 contains material related to Professor McClain's job assignments at UNI and to the university as a whole. Box 2 consists of files utilized by McClain in her classroom teaching. Box 3 contains materials documenting the work of the Minorities in Teaching (MIT) program at UNI, of which McClain was Director for a number of years. Box 4 continues the MIT material and also contains files detailing the Multicultural Coordinating Committee. Box 5 consists of materials chronicling McClain's work on minority recruitment and retention along with her outreach efforts. Box 6 contains documents on the Multicultural Future Teachers Academy (MFTA) and reference files used by McClain in her work. Box 7 details McClain's work with the Multicultural Teachers Alliance (MTA), conference attendance, photographs, and video cassettes. Box 8 has mostly unidentified photographs.
These papers will prove a useful resource for anyone interested in multiculturalism in Iowa--especially at UNI--as well as matters of diversity, minority recruitment and retention, multicultural education, and the teaching profession. This collection includes documents, files, emails, newspaper clippings, photographs, and videos detailing the cultural awareness and social leadership expressed by Professor McClain while at UNI.

Biographical / Historical
These papers consist of material accumulated and used by Janet McClain in the course of her work on the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa. For thirty-four years, Professor McClain worked at UNI as an educator and champion of diversity. She held numerous teaching positions in the College of Education, starting with teaching at the Malcolm Price Laboratory School and later moving to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Professor McClain was an advocate for minority issues both in and out of the classroom.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The College of Education arranged for the contents of Boxes 1-7 to be sent to SC&UA after Professor McClain's death. Professor Joan Duea gave the contents of Box 8 to SC&UA in May 2015.
