Scope and Contents

William Callahan’s papers consist primarily of materials related to his duties as associate dean in the University of Northern Iowa College of Education. Included are materials related to the Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) projects, the Renaissance Group technology project, and the InTIME project, along with College of Education work in Romania and Moldova. The collection also contains projects associated with Bureau of Indian Affairs schools and work in Black Sea nations. Some of the materials related to Callahan’s research, such as classroom inclusion and navigating change.

Biographical / Historical

William P. Callahan worked at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) from 1979 until the mid-2010s as a faculty member in the university’s College of Education. Prior to UNI, Callahan was the director of special projects for handicapped students at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Callahan served in various leadership roles within the College of Education during his tenure at UNI, including an associate dean starting in 1988, the dean of the College of Education beginning in 2007, and interim College of Education dean from 2002-2003. He was also the acting head of curriculum and instruction, the head of the Department of Special Education, and a professor of special education. Callahan was also the executive director of the Renaissance Group, which was a consortium of universities who worked to improve member campuses’ educator preparation programs.

Callahan received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and special education from the University of South Florida (1968); his M.A.T. in reading education from Rollins College (1971); and his Ed.D. in special education administration from the University of Florida in 1975.

The current arrangement of these papers closely follows the rough subject arrangement in which the papers arrived in the archives.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Boxes 1 and 2 were sent to SC&UA in 2006 by William Callahan, Associate Dean of the College of Education. The majority of Box 3 arrived in 2008.
