Scope and Contents

The collection is arranged into four series. The first, Administrative Records, consists of three subseries. The first, Departmental Memos, dates from 1986-1991, and includes subject such as employee-related items (term appointments, funding, open positions); courses and scheduling; equipment needs; policies and procedures; budgetary information; and materials related to the day-to-day departmental operations. The second subseries, Departmental Reviews, is comprised of an external review and an internal review of the department and includes reports and correspondence. The third subseries, Social Work, which was once part of the department, is comprised of a field instruction manual and proposed curricular changes.

The second series, Programs & Ephemera, dates from 1962-1998, with a few items from 2016, and includes brochures, pamphlets, flyers, and scattered correspondence. Topics consist of events, course offerings, information about the departmental majors/minors, position vacancies, and curricular matters. The third series in the collection, Publications, has three issues of the UNI Journal of Social Thought from 1975-1976, which was published by the department. The final series, New Iowans Program, consists of four booklets concerning the program. This program, of which Professor of Anthropology Mark Grey was director, started c. 2000 and sought to address Iowa's growing diversity by "helping new immigrants make the transition into jobs and life in the United States."

Conditions Governing Access

Most materials are open for research. Materials related to the confidentiality of personnel, student, medical, and other legally protected records are CLOSED to researchers for 70 years from the date of creation. Consult the archivist with any questions or concerns.

Biographical / Historical

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology, first part of the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences from 1968-1981, has existed in some form at the University of Northern Iowa ever since. It has undergone name changes since its establishment including the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (1969-1975); the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work (1975-1982); and again the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (1982-1997). In 1981, it became part of the new College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. In 1997, it became the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology, a name which it retains today.
