Department of Psychology Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection is arranged into three series. The first, Administrative Records, includes a variety of memos about position openings, position descriptions, course offerings from assorted years, a handful of documents concerning departmental research focuses and testing, and a 1981 external review of the department. Also included in this series is a 1976 progress report for the Iowa Gerontology Project. The series dates from 1971-1981 and 1992-1998.
Series 2, Correspondence, consists of topics largely concerning department goals, including the masters program and other course offerings, staffing needs and considerations, and a 1990 affirmative action plan. The series is arranged chronologically and runs from 1980-1998. The final series, Programs & Ephemera, includes brochures, flyers, and pamphlets featuring lectures sponsored by the department; course advertisements, including for a Gerontology Certificate Program; information about the department; and information about the newly offered Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology.

Biographical / Historical
The Department of Psychology first became a standalone subject in 1968 after moving from the Education and Psychology Department. In 1969, with UNI's new university status, it fell under the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences from 1969-1980 and has been part of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences since 1980. Today, the department is one of the largest majors at UNI and through its course offerings, research opportunities, and co-curricular activities provides its students with "a broad understanding of human psychological processes." See the department website for more information.
