Jonathan J. Lu. Papers
Scope and Contents
The Jonathan J. Lu Papers consist of correspondence and documents related to Lu’s teaching and research while at the University of Northern Iowa. Included is correspondence with individuals in the Department of Geography, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the wider university, such as department head Basheer K. Nijim and dean Robert Morin. Other correspondents include people outside of UNI. The collection covers courses he taught, including syllabi, study guides and exams; book reviews; research proposals; grant applications; requests for funding; and applications for faculty research funds. Numerous research papers Lu wrote are also present, such as “The Dynamic U.S. Rice Industry: A Temporal-Spatial Analysis” and “The Geography That is in the Bible: A Definition of the Geography of the Bible."

Most materials are open for research. Materials related to the confidentiality of personnel, student, medical, and other legally protected records are CLOSED to researchers for 70 years from the date of creation. Consult the archivist with any questions or concerns.

Biographical / Historical
Jonathan Jung-Hui Lu was born in Fukien, China, on May 5, 1927, later becoming a United States citizen. He received a Bachelor of Education degree in geography and history from the National Taiwan Normal University in 1954, a Bachelor of Didactics from the Asbury Theological Seminary, a Master of Arts in geography from Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington. He joined the University of Northern Iowa faculty in 1973 as an Associate Professor of Geography and in 1980, was granted full professorship. Lu served as the Acting Head of the Geography Department in the spring and summer of 1981, as well as from 1987-1989. In 1989, he became head of the department, a position he held until 1991. He retired from UNI in 1992. Lu later became president of the Holy Light Theological Seminary in Taiwan.
