University of Northern Iowa Emeritus Association Records

 Collection
Identifier: 08/00/06

Scope and Contents

This collection is arranged into four series. It contains handwritten and typewritten documents, many of which are annotated. Series 1, Correspondence, dates from 1996-2012 and includes correspondence calling for nominations, thank you notes, invitations to participate in events, seeking financial support from UNIEA members, and other Association business matters.

The second series, Administrative Records, is the most extensive series in the collection and dates from 1990-2016. It consists of six groupings arranged alphabetically. The Advisory Council materials include minutes and agendas covering topics such as membership, annual luncheons, committee work, and policies and procedures. Annual Meeting items contain minutes and agendas from that event, with discussions focused primarily on activities from the previous year and planning for the upcoming year. Documents from the Eller Scholarship Committee include correspondence, application requirements, drafts, and a handful of committee minutes. The Luncheon Planning Files contain correspondence, brochures, pamphlets, and more detailing the planning of these luncheons. The final two groupings, Membership and Miscellaneous Documents, consist of membership information and bylaws, policies, and procedures respectively.

Series 3, Financial Records, contains Statements of Change for the Emeritus Association Fund, memos about accounts and other account summaries and receipts. The final series, Publications, is comprised of the UNIEA newsletter, dating from Winter 1993 to Spring 2010, with one issue from Spring 2016, and three copies of UNI Emeritus History.

Boxes 4 to 6 were acquired in August 2020 as an addition to the existing University of Northern Iowa Emeritus Association Records. The addition consists of materials created and used by the Emeritus Association in the course of its work. Examples include membership information, correspondence, and brochures. Some of the materials are annotated and marked up. Folders titles and contents were maintained as they were upon arrival at the library.

Biographical / Historical

The University of Northern Iowa Emeritus Association (UNIEA) was founded in 1986, with retired professor Ross Nielson creating procedures and getting approval from the university and faculty. UNIEA's purpose is to involve emeriti in UNI affairs and the UNI community, as well as to create a community amongst the emeriti faculty themselves. UNIEA members must have emeritus status as defined by UNI, which includes at least ten years of service at UNI. Those who are given emeritus status automatically join UNIEA. The Association has an advisory council and also holds annual luncheons. For more information, please visit the UNIEA website.
