Edward W. Goetch Papers
Scope and Contents
The Edward W. Goetch Papers contains articles, notebooks (with both handwritten and typed content), bulletins, and lecture notes written by or about Goetch. These items were written early in his career, with some written during his time at the University of Iowa, and others from his early years at the Iowa State Teachers College. The materials date from roughly 1910 to 1930. The collection contains two copies of his masters thesis, "Status on the Normal Training High School of Iowa," as well as articles he wrote about education, particularly regarding the implementation of Kindergarten as an educative tool for young children.
Series 1, Notes, contains a variety of materials written by Goetch in the course of his academic career. Included are lecture notes on topics such as morale in teaching and population. There are also assorted notebooks containing notes on various topics like sociology, physics, and educational psychology. These items looks to be Goetch's notes, some from his time at the University of Iowa.
The second series in the collection, Writings, consists of works and pieces written by Goetch. Included are two copies of his dissertation as well as a copy of his two-part thesis regarding kindergarten. Also included are reviews and a few articles.
Series 3, Programs and Ephemera, is comprised of materials related to a variety of topics, such as banquets, conventions, and books. Types of materials include programs, flyers, and booklets. Also included is a 1916 calendar with poems, located in Box 4. Items of note: "Basic Text Books in Use in the Spencer Public Schools 1917-18"; "Outline of Courses of Study, Spencer High School"; "Physiology and Hygiene".
The fourth series, Miscellaneous Documents, contains materials that, for the most part, concern education, including "Democracy and Education," establishing a curriculum, and public schools. Additionally, there is a handful of poems, a "History of American Education" true/false quiz, a synopsis of a National Superintendents Meeting, and a copy of a guide for the course, "Exploring the Teaching Profession."
The fifth series, Photographs, is comprised of three photographs. Two are of summer schools ISTC sponsored in 1920 and 1921, as well as one of the ISTC student body in the fall of 1922. Note: These photographs are fragile and must be handled with caution.
The final series, Clippings, consists of photocopied articles from Goetch's time working in the Bedford and Spencer schools, as well as his time at the University of Iowa. Also included are a few articles about the Iowa State Teachers College and President Seerley, education legislation, and race relations. The items generally dates from the early 20th century.
**Researchers should note that Box 2 of this collection contains documents about population management and eugenics, which involves language relating to race relations**

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Edward Goetch (1881-1968) was born in Cresco, Iowa. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D from the University of Iowa.
Goetch worked as a rural school teacher, elementary and secondary school principal, and was superintendent of schools in Bedford and Spencer, Iowa, before joining the Iowa State Teachers College faculty in 1918 as a Professor of Education. He held this position until 1928 when he became Director of the Placement Bureau, a capacity in which he served until 1951. From 1951 to 1963, he assumed emeritus status while also serving as Placement Consultant at ISTC and the State College of Iowa.
Goetch also contributed to the broader Cedar Falls community. He served as President of the Rotary Club from 1944-1945, engaged actively with the Methodist Church and Wesley Foundation, and was involved in Masonic organizations such as the Knights Templar, Shrine, and Eastern Star.
