Scope and Contents

The Elva Engelkes Akkerman collection consists of four items from her time at the Iowa State Teachers College in the late 1930s. Included is information about ISTC’s Marking (grading) System, Service Charges for Furnishing Transcripts of Records, a program for ISTC’s Sixth Annual Recognition Day Program, and the 1937-1938 Handbook for Bartlett Hall Residents.

Biographical / Historical

Elva Engelkes Akkerman was a student at the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) during the 1937-1938 school year. She graduated in the spring of 1938 from the One-Year Curriculum for Teachers in Rural Schools program at ISTC.

She was born on November 23, 1919. After graduating from ISTC, Engelkes taught in Colfax and Pleasant Valley, Iowa, rural schools for three years. She passed away in 1965.
