Scope and Contents

The materials in this collection relate solely to Gale E. Christianson’s book This Wild Abyss: The Story of the Men Who Made Astronomy, which was dedicated to Christianson’s State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa) history professor, Dr. Howard Thompson. Included are a copy of the book along with two reviews for it from The New York Times and The New Yorker. The collection also contains three letters from Christianson to Howard Thompson, which include topics such as Christianson’s trip to England, the New York Times review, the book’s dedication to Thompson and why Christianson chose to honor him, and life news.

Biographical / Historical

Gale E. Christianson received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in political science (1964); his master’s degree from the State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa), in 1966, and his doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1971. He later taught history at Indiana State University. His teaching and research specialty was the history of science. He was the author of many publications, including This Wild Abyss: The Story of the Men Who Made Astronomy. Christianson passed away in 2010.
