Scope and Contents

Researchers should note that there is some repetition of subject coverage between the contents of the first four boxes and Boxes 5-7. This collection gives a good picture of President Koob's interest in community service and university outreach.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Koob was born in Graettinger, Iowa, in 1941. He attended the State College of Iowa (now UNI), majoring in chemistry and graduating in 1962. Koob then taught math and science in Moville, Iowa, before attending the University of Kansas, where he earned his Ph.D. in chemistry. Koob and his wife, Yvonne, had seven children. Koob joined the North Dakota State University (Fargo, ND) faculty in 1967 as an assistant professor of chemistry. While at NDSU, he also served as the vice president for academic affairs and the university's interim president. From 1990-1995, Koob was the senior vice president and vice president for Academic Affairs at California Polytechnic State University.

Koob served as the University of Northern Iowa's president from 1995-2006. While he was at UNI, the university's endowment increased by over 100%, enrollment and graduate numbers "reached record levels; and the number of privately funded scholarships increased. Additionally, UNI "had more students benefit from international experience than any other master's-level university in the United States." Koob retired from the UNI presidency in 2006 and returned to California Polytechnic in 2008 as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, a position in which he served until his retirement in 2012.
