Linn County Rural School Records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Linn County, Iowa dating from 1847-1976. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “Office of the Superintendent, 1847-1971”, “Township, 1919-1942”, “District and School, 1905-1976". Series 1. "Office of the Superintendent, 1847-1971" contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. This series consists of Records of the Superintendent, Superintendents' Files, Sale of School Land Register, High School Normal Training Record, Teachers' Examination Record, Record of Teachers' Certificates, Teacher Contracts, Teacher Permanent Cumulative Record, School Officer and Teacher Records, Teachers' Teaching Records, Proof of Successful Teaching Experience, List of Teachers for Linn County, Teacher Records, Reports to Superintendent of Schools of Teachers Employed, Eighth Grade Examination Records, and Eighth Grade Graduation Records. Series 2. "Township, 1905-1976" contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists of Township Board of Education Financial Records and Township School Censuses. Series 3. "District and School, 1905-1976" contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by individual districts and schools. This series consists of a School History of Beach School, Room Registers, Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, and Preliminary Classification Reports.
