Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Kossuth County, Iowa dating from 1863-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series -- “County Board of Education, 1881-1971”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1874-1975”, “Township, 1863-1954”, and “District and School, 1871-1966” -- which are sub-divided by format. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1891-1978” contains records that were created by or utilized by the County Board of Education. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1926-1968 consists solely of Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1881-1971 contains County Board of Education Minutes and a Register of the Election of County Superintendents and Term of Office. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1874-1975” contains records that were created by or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1902-1966 consists of School-masters’ Club Records and a Personnel File. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1874-1975 contains Teachers’ Examination Record, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Record of County Superintendents’ Office Personnel, School Officer and Teacher Records, Teachers’ Teaching Records, Record of Schools Taught, and Eighth Grade Examination Record. Series 3. “Township, 1904-1960” contains records created by or utilized by the Township Board of Education. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1863-1954 consists of Township Board of Education Minutes and Financial Records. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1908-1949 contains Township Board of Education Financial Records and Township School Censuses. Series 4. “District and School, 1870-1969” contains records pertaining to individual school and/or districts. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1871-1954 consists of Complete District Record and District Board of Education Minutes and Financial Records. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1883-1966 contains Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent,  District School Censuses, Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers.
