This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Johnson County, Iowa dating from 1873-1978. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into two series: “Office of the Superintendent, 1888-1978” and “District and School, 1873-1966”. Series 1. “Office of the Superintendent, 1888-1978” contains microfilmed copies of records created or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent.  It includes High School Normal Training Records, Teachers' Examination Records, Record of Teachers' Certificates, Employment Recods, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 2. “District and School, 1873-1966” contains microfilmed copies of records pertaining to individual schools and districts. It contains District Board of Education Meeting Minutes, District Board of Education Financial Records, Room Registers, Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, Daily Attendance Registers, and Daily Programs.
