Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Jasper County, Iowa dating from 1869-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series -- “County Board of Education, 1902-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1869-1975”, “Township, 1875-1955”, and “District and School, 1881-1974” -- which are sub-divided by format. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1902-1975” contains records that were created by or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series consists of an Organizational Chart, Area XI Policy Board Records, County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Financial Records, County Board of Education Legal Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and Plat Maps. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1869-1975” contains records that were created by or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1877-1975 consists of Superintendents’ Annual Reports, Superintendents’ Record, Superintendents’ Financial Records, County Census and Enrollment Records, County School Administrators' Minutes, Iowa Association of Superintendents' Minutes, Superintendents' Reports, Superintendents' Secretaries' Annual Reports, Treasurers' Reports, Legal Documents, Iowa Public School Data, Annual Evaluations of Schools, Visitation Reports, Employers’ Tax Returns, Insurance Records, Salary Records, School Lunch Program Records, Sick Leave Reports, Special Education Records, Speech Theraphy Records, Transportaton and Tuition Records, Vocational Rehabilitation Records, High School Normal Training Records, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Teacher Contracts, Teachers’ Record Cards, School Officer and Teacher Records, Teachers’ Reading Circle, Teachers' Teaching Records, Professional Development Records, Parochial School Records, Eighth Grade Examination Records, Eighth Grade Graduation Records, and a Grade Book. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1869-1975 contains Teachers’ Examination Record, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Teachers’ Record Cards, School Officer and Teacher Records, Superintendents’ Record of Teachers’ Service, Substitute Teacher Cards, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3. “Township, 1875-1955” contains records created by or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists of Township Board of Education Secretaries’ Records and a Tuition Record from Mariposa Township. Series 4. “District and School Records, 1881-1974” contains records pertaining to individual school and/or districts. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1883-1974 consists of District Board of Education Secretaries’ Record, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, District School Censuses, Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1881-1960 consists of Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, and Daily Attendance Registers.
