Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Iowa County, Iowa, from 1862-1973.  The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. This collection is arranged into three series: "Office of the Superintendent, 1863-1973", “Township, 1862-1876”, and "District and School, 1863-1966". Series 1. “Office of the Superintendent, 1863-1973” contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. This series consists of Superintendents’ Annual Reports, Superintendents’ Files, Record of Appeals Before the County Superintendent, High School Normal Training Record, Teachers’ Examination Records, Records of Teachers’ Certificates, Teachers’ Certificate Renewal Record, Teacher Records, School Officer Record, County Superintendents’ Report of Qualifications of and Demand for Rural School Teachers, Superintendents’ Report of Teacher Personnell, Superintendents’ Report of Qualifications of Elementary and Secondary Teachers, Summary of Individual Reports of Teacher Personnel, Iowa Professional School Employee Data Sheets (IPSEDS), Educational Directories, Pupils’ Permanent Records, Eighth Grade Examination Records, Eighth Grade Graduation Records, High School Admission Certificates, and High School Grades and Graduation Records. Series 2. “Township, 1862-1876” contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists of Township Board of Education Minutes, Township Board of Education Financial Records, and Township School Censuses. Series 3. “District and School, 1863-1966” contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by individual districts and schools. This series consists of District Board of Education Minutes, District Board of Education Financial Records, Complete District Records, Library Reports, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers.

Materials classified as Items are located on microfilm.  The first number indicates the reel, the second indicates the location of the record on that reel.  Items are not necessarly individual records; a change in Item number may indicate a change in record type, date, township, or district.  These item numbers have been applied for reference purposes by the archives staff and are not present on the film itself.
