Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Humboldt County, Iowa dating from 1896-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “County Board of Education, 1896-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1896-1975”, and “District and School, 1915-1956” -- which are sub-divided by format where necessary. Series 1.  "County Board of Education, 1896-1975" contains records and microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1896, 1955, 1960 consists of Reorganization and Consolidation Records and a Plat Book. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1919-1975 contains County Board of Education Meeting Minutes and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2.  "Office of the Superintendent, 1896-1975" consists of records created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1902-1959 contains School Disputes, School Officer and Teachers Records, Rural Teacher's Association Meeting Minutes and Financial Records, Teachers' Record Cards, and Pupil Awards. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1896-1975 contains Payroll Records, Iowa Professional School Employee Data Sheets (IPSEDS), High School Normal Training Records, Teachers' Examination Records, Records of Teachers' Certificates, School Officer and Teacher Records, Records of Schools Taught, Educational Directories, Eighth Grade Examination Records, and High School Admission Certificates. Series 3.  "District and School, 1915-1956" contains microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by individual schools and districts. This series consists solely of Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent.
