Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Henry County, Iowa dating from 1863-1980. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: “County Board of Education, 1915-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1895-1980”, “Township, 1937-1975”, and “District and School, 1863-1960”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1915-1975” contains records that were created by or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series consists of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Election Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, Blueprints, Plat Maps, Maps, and Atlases. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1895-1980” contains records that were created by or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. This series consists of Legal Documents, Superintendents’ Files, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Teachers’ Certificate Renewal Record, School Officer Record, School Officer and Teacher Record, Directories, Literary Society Minutes, Teacher Contracts, Teachers’ Record Cards, Record of Teachers in Rural Schools, Pupils’ Permanent Records, Special Education and Student Health Records, Pupil Awards, Eighth Grade Examination Records, High School Grades and Graduation Records, Stanford Achievement Test Records, Report Cards, and Class Photographs. Series 3. “Township, 1937-1975” contains records created by or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists of Township Board of Education Meeting Minutes, Township Board of Education Financial Records, and the Centennial Edition of the New London Journal. Series 4. “District and School, 1863-1960” contains records pertaining to individual school and/or districts. This series consists of District Board of Education Secretaries’ Records, District Board of Education Treasurers’ Records, District Board of Education Financial Records, District Board of Education Election Materials, School Specifications, Land Transfer, Notice to Inspectors, School Appraisement, Resolution for Condemnation, School Building Contract, Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, District School Censuses, Library Reports, Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers.
