Greene County Rural School Records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Greene County, Iowa dating from 1882-1963. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: “County Board of Education, 1870-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1886-1975”, “Township, 1871-1886“, and “District and School, 1870-1959”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1870-1975” contains records and microfilmed copies of records created by or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series contains County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Financial Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and Maps. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1886-1975” contains microfilmed copies of records that are created by or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. Included are Teachers' Complete Records, Record of Teachers' Certificates, School Officer and Teachers' Record, Record of Schools Taught, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3. "Township, 1871-1886" is comprised of records and microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists solely of Township Board of Education Financial Records. Series 4. “District and School, 1870-1959” contains microfilmed copies of records pertaining to individual schools and districts. It contains School Registers and Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent.
