This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Franklin County, Iowa dating from 1896-1966. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “Office of the Superintendent, 1896-1966” and “District and School, 1897-1966”. Series 1. "County Board of Education, 1919-1967" is comprised of microfilmed copies of records created by the County Board of Education. This series consists solely of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes. Series 2. "Office of the Superintendent, 1896-1966" is comprised of microfilmed copies of records created by the Office of the Superintendent. This series consists of High School Normal Training Records, Teachers' Examination Record, Records of Teachers' Certificates, Teachers' Certificate Renewal Record, School Officer and Teacher Records, Record of Teachers' Employed, County School Censuses, Notices of School Openings, Pupils' Personal and Classification Reports, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3. "District and School, 1897-1966" is composed of microfilmed copies of records relating to individual districts or schools.  This series consists of Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent and Daily Attendance Registers.
