Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Davis County, Iowa dating from 1880-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into six series: “County Board of Education, 1919-1975”, "County Board of Education - Microfilm, 1890-1975", “Office of the Superintendent, 1880-1975”, "Office of the Superintendent - Microfilm, 1880-1975", “District and School, 1904-1944”, and "District and School - Microfilm, 1895-1975". Series 1a. "County Board of Education, 1919-1970" is composed of records relating to the activities of the County Board of Education. It includes County Board of Education Meeting Minutes and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 1b. "County Board of Education - Microfilm, 1890-1975" contains microfilmed copies of records relating to the activities of the County Board of Education. It includes County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Financial Records, and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2a. "Office of the Superintendent, 1880-1975" is comprised of records documenting the activites of the Office of the Superintendent. It includes Superintendents' Annual Reports and Financial Records, Secretaries' Annual Reports, Teachers' Examination Records, School Disputes, Teachers' Employment Records, and County School Censuses. Series 2b. "Office of the Superintendent - Microfilm" 1880-1975" is comprised of microfilmed copies of records documenting the activites of the Office of the Superintendent. It includes Superintendents' Annual Reports, Superintendents' Cash Book, and Teachers' Examination and Employment Records. Series 3a. "School and District, 1904-1944" is composed of records documenting the activities of individual districts and schools. It includes District Board of Education Minutes and Daily Attendance Registers. Series 3b. "School and District - Microfilm, 1895-1975" is composed of microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by individual districts and schools. It includes District Board of Education Minutes, District Board of Education Financial Records, Room Registers, and Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent.
