Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Crawford County, Iowa dating from 1904-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “County Board of Education, 1950-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1873-1979”, and “District and School Records, 1894-1958”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1950-1975" contains microfilmed copies of records created or utilized by  documenting the County Board of Education. It includes County Board of Education Financial Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and Election Materials. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1873-1979” is composed of microfilmed copies of records created or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. It includes Superintendents' Annual Reports, Superintendents' Secretaries' Annual Reports, Complete Secretaries Handbook, Teachers' Institute Cash Book, High School Normal Training Record, Secretaries' Report of Teachers Employed, Teachers' Complete Records, Record of Teachers' Certificates, Educational Directories, School Officer and Teacher Record, Enrollment Records, Eighth Grade Examination Records, and Eighth Grade Graduation Records. Series 3. “District and School, 1894-1958” contains microfilmed copies of records created or utilized by individual schools and districts. It includes a Complete District Record, Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, and Daily Attendance Registers.
