Cherokee County Rural School Records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Cherokee County, Iowa dating from 1891-1978. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: “County Board of Education, 1891-1978”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1880-1975”, “Township, 1904-1960”, and “District and School, 1870-1969”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1891-1978” contains microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series consists of County Board of Education Minutes, County Board of Education Secretaries’ and Treasurers’ Annual Reports, Election Records, County Library Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and Plat Maps. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1880-1975” contains microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. This series consists of Superintendents’ Library Fund Account Record, High School Normal Training Records, Teachers’ Teaching Records, Teachers’ Record Cards, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Pupils’ Permanent Records, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3. “Township, 1904-1960” containsmicrofilmed copies of records created by or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists of Township Board of Education Secretaries’ and Treasurers’ Reports and Township School Censuses from Sheridan Township. Series 4. “District and School, 1870-1969” contains records on microfilm pertaining to individual school and/or districts. This series consists of District Board of Education Minutes, District Board of Education Financial Records, Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Complete Term Registers, and Daily Attendance Registers.
