Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Calhoun County, Iowa dating from 1877-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series — County Board of Education, 1887-1975, Office of the Superintendent, 1880-1975, Township, 1877-1966, and District and School, 1901-1957 — which are sub-divided by format. Series 1: County Board of Education, 1887-1975 contains records created by or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series includes County Board of Education Minutes and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2: Office of the Superintendent, 1880-1975 contains records created by or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1888-1964 includes Superintendent Records, County Board of Education Financial Records, Letters to Parents from the Superintendent, Calhoun Association of Retarded Citizens History/Reports, Teachers’ Contracts, and Pupil Classification Reports. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1880-1975 includes Superintendents’ Records, Teacher Records, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Teachers’ Certificate Renewal Records, School Officer Records, School Officer and Teacher Records, Record of Schools Taught, Record of Teachers, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3: Township, 1877-1966 contains copies of records created by or utilized by the Township Board of Education Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1877-1958 includes Township Board of Education Minutes and Financial Records and Township Census Records. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1954-1966 includes Township Board of Education Secretaries’ Records and Township Board of Education Treasurers’ Records. Series 4: District and School, 1901-1957 contains documents pertaining to individual schools and/or districts. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1901-1957 includes Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, and Daily Attendance Registers. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1911-1953 consists solely of Daily Attendance Registers.
