This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Pottawattamie County, Iowa dating from 1876-1979. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “County Board of Education, 1876-1979”, “Township, 1911-1918”, and “District and School, 1877-1968”. Series 1. “Office of the Superintendent, 1876-1979” contains records and records on microfiche created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. It is divided into two sub-series, “Teacher-Related Records, 1876-1979” and “Student-Related Records, 1902-1974”. Sub-Series 1: Teacher-Related Records, 1876-1979 consists of Teachers' Examination Records, Records of Teachers' Certificates, Record of Teachers' Record of Schools Taught, Teachers' Record Cards, and School Officer and Teacher Records. Sub-Series 2: Student-Related Records, 1902-1974 consists of Eighth Grade Examination Records and Incomplete-Drops and Transfers. Series 2. “Township, 1911-1918” contains records on microfiche created and/or utilized at the township level. This series contains Township Census Records. Series 3. “District and School, 1877-1968” contains records and records on microfiche created and/or utilized by individual schools and districts. It is divided into four sub-series: "District Board of Education Records, 1879-1956", "School Census Records, 1895-1956", "Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, 1931-1968", and "Daily Attendance, 1877-1957". Sub-Series 1: District Board of Education Records, 1879-1956 consists of District Board of Education Minutes and District Board of Education Financial Records. Sub-Series 2: School Census Records, 1895-1956 consists solely of District School Censuses. Sub-Series 3: Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, 1931-1968 consists solely of Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent. Sub-Series 4: Daily Attendance, 1877-1957 consists solely of Daily Attendance Registers.
