Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Tama County, Iowa dating from 1890-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: “County Board of Education, 1948-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1890-1975”, “Township, 1948”, and “District and School, 1899-1966”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1948-1975” contains microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series includes County Board of Education Meeting Minutes and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1890-1975” is composed of records and copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. This series includes Records of Teachers' Certificates, Teacher Contracts, Educational Directories, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3. "Township, 1948" is comprised of copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists solely of Township School Censuses. Series 4. “District and School, 1899-1966” contains copies of records on microfilm created and/or utilized by individual districts and schools. This series consists of Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, Preliminary Classification Reports, Monroe's Standardized Silent Reading Test Scores, Daily Attendance Registers, and Room Registers.

Materials classified as Items are located on microfilm.  The first number indicates the reel, the second indicates the location of the record on that reel.  Items are not necessarly individual records; a change in Item number may indicate a change in record type, date, township, or district.  These item numbers have been applied for reference purposes by the archives staff and are not present on the film itself.
