Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Sioux County, Iowa dating from 1877-1980. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series -- “County Board of Education, 1919-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1887-1980”, “Township, 1882-1966”, and “District and School, 1877-1966” -- which are sub-divided by format. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1919-1975” contains records that were created by or utilized by the County Board of Education. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1919-1974 consists of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Financial Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and a Sioux County Atlas. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1919-1975 contains County Board of Education Meeting Minutes and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1887-1980” contains records that were created by or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1888-1980 consists of Superintendents’ Annual Report, Superintendents’ File, High School Normal Training Records, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Payroll Disbursement Record, Teacher Record Cards, School Officer and Teacher Records, Superintendents’ Record of Teachers’ Service, Record of Teachers’ in Rural Schools, Eighth Grade Examination Records, and Eighth Grade Record Cards. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1887-1975 contains High School Normal Training Records, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Teacher Certifications, Teacher Contracts, Teachers’ Record Cards, School Officer and Teacher Records, Teachers’ Teaching Records, Record of Schools Taught, Eighth Grade Record Cards, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Series 3. “Township, 1882-1966” contains records created by or utilized by the Township Board of Education. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1882-1966 consists of Township Board of Education Minutes, Township Board of Education Financial Records, Township Board of Education Expenses, and Township School Censuses. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1888-1966 contains Township Board of Education Secretaries’ Records, Township Board of Education Treasurers’ Records, and Township School Censuses. Series 4. “District and School, 1877-1966” contains records pertaining to individual school and/or districts. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1877-1962 consists of Complete District Record, District Board of Education Secretaries’ Record, District Board of Education Treasurers’ Record, School Play Program, School Specifications, School Deeds, Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Library Reports, and Daily Attendance Registers. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1881-1966 contains Complete District Record, District Board of Education Treasurers’ Record, Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers.
