Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Pocahontas County, Iowa dating from 1878-1976. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: “County Board of Education,1900-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1878-1973”, “Township, 1950-1956”, and “District and School, 1879-1965”. Series 1. "County Board of Education, 1900-1975" is composed of records and microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series includes County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Financial Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and Plat Maps. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1878-1973” is comprised of microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. This series contains Record of School House Sites in Pocahontas County, Records of Teachers' Certificates, School Officer and Teacher Records, Superintendents' Record of Teachers' Service, Pocahontas County Rural Teachers Association, County School Censuses, Eighth Grade Examination Records, High School Grades and Graduation Records, and Pupils' Permanent Records. Series 3. "Township, 1950-1956" is comprised of microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series consists of Township Board of Education Minutes and Township Board of Education Financial Records. Series 4. “District and School, 1879-1965” is composed of records and microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by individual districts and schools. This series consists of District Board of Education Financial Records, Room Registers, Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, Preliminary Classification Reports, Daily Attendance Registers
