Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Woodbury County, Iowa dating from 1877-1978. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “County Board of Education, 1943-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1888-1978”, and “District and School, 1877-1976”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1943-1975” contains microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series consists of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Treasurers’ Record, County Board of Education Expenses, Requisitions for Warrants, County Board of Education Correspondence, Joint District Reports, and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1888-1978” containsmicrofilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office.  This series consists of County Superintendent Selection Records, Superintendents’ Annual Report, Superintendents’ Record, Superintendents’ File, Secretaries’ Annual Report to the Superintendent, Parochial and Private School Secretaries’ Annual Reports, Treasurers’ Reports, Legal Document and Correspondence, Purchase Orders, Insurance Forms, Superintendents’ Library Fund Account Record, Teachers’ Examination Record, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Teacher/Applicant Record, Teachers’ Record Cards and Teachers’ Certificates, School Officer Record, Record of Teachers in Rural Schools, Substitute Teacher Cards and Certificates, Iowa Professional School Employee Data Sheets (IPSEDS), County School Censuses, County Superintendents’ Report on Handicapped Persons, Eighth Grade Graduation Records, High School Average Daily Attendance, and Stanford Achievement Test Records. Series 3. “District and School, 1877-1976” contains microfilmed copies of records pertaining to individual school and/or districts. This series consists of District Board of Education Meeting Minutes, District Board of Education Secretaries’ Record, District Board of Education Treasurers’ Record, District Board of Education Financial Records, Annual Transportation Report, Basic Educational Data Survey, Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, District School Censuses, Preliminary Teacher Information Cards, Teachers’ Personal Report, Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers.
