Winneshiek County Rural School Records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Winneshiek County, Iowa dating from 1864-1975. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: "County Board of Education, 1911-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1921-1975”, “Township, 1864-1902”, and “District and School, 1903-1960” -- which are sub-divided by format where necessary. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1911-1975” is composed of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1911-1967 consists of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, and Plat Maps. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1974-1975 contains County Board of Education Financial Records and Plat Maps. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1921-1975” contains records created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1921-1948 includes Teachers’ Examination Records, Teachers’ Teaching Records, and Eighth Grade Examination Records. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1970-1975 consists solely of Payroll Records. Series 3. “Township, 1864-1902” is composed of records created and/or utilized by the Township Board of Education. This series contains Township Board of Education Meeting Minutes. Series 4. “District and School, 1903-1960” contains records created and/or utilized by individual districts and schools. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1903-1960 contains Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Library Records, and Daily Attendance Registers. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1949-1958 consists of Room Registers, Teachers' Reports to the Superintendent, and a Daily Attendance Register.
