Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Washington County, Iowa dating from 1858-1969. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into four series: “County Board of Education, 1868-1901, c. 1940”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1858-1969”, “Township, 1865-1940”, and “District and School, 1873-1966”. Series 1. "County, 1868-1901, Circa 1940" is composed of microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series consists of a Record of Sub-District Appeals and a draft of "An Historical sketch of Washington County" written for the Federal Works Project of the 1940s that contains manuscript corrections. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1858-1969” is comprised of microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. This series consists of Teachers' Examination Records, Records of Teachers' Certificates, Teachers' Certificate Renewal Record, Teacher Contracts, Teachers' Record Cards, Teachers Association Minutes, School Officer Record, Record of Teachers Employed, Record of Teachers in Rural Schools, County School Censuses, Eighth Grade Examination Records, Enrollment Records, and Summary of Pupils' Attendance. This series consists of Township Board of Education Minutes, Township Board of Education Financial Records, and Township School Censuses. Series 4. “District and School, 1873-1966” is composed of microfilmed copies of records created and/or utilized by individual schools and districts.
