Scope and Contents

This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Sioux County, Iowa dating from 1858-1972. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series -- “County Board of Education, 1919-1970”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1858-1976”, and “District and School, 1886-1967” -- which are sub-divided by format where necessary. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1919-1970” contains records that were created by or utilized by the County Board of Education.  It consists of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes, County Board of Education Financial Records, Reorganization and Consolidation Records, Educational Directories, Class Photographs, and a Plat Map. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1858-1976” contains records that were created by or utilized by the Superintendent’s Office. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1858-1975 contains Superintendents’ Annual Reports, Superintendents’ Cash books, High School Normal Training Records, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Records of Teachers, Teacher Record Cards, School Eighth Grade Examination Records, High School Admission Certificates, Textbook Records, and an arithmetic supplement: "Our Farm and Home Problems." Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1925-1976 consists solely of Teachers' Record Cards. Series 3. “District and School, 1886-1967" contains records pertaining to individual school and/or districts. Sub-Series 1: Physical Records, 1886-1967 consists of Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Room Registers, and Daily Attendance Registers, and Complete Term Registers. Sub-Series 2: Records on Microfilm, 1887-1966 contains District Board of Education Secretaries' Records, Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, Daily Attendance Registers, Complete Term Registers, Stanford Achievement Test Records, Informal Reading Tests, and Complete High School Accounting Records.
