This collection contains documents from the rural school system of Mills County, Iowa dating from 1881-1978. The records cover a majority of the rural schools’ histories, but they are not comprehensive: some records were lost before their transfer to the Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture. The collection material is arranged into three series: “County Board of Education, 1948-1975”, “Office of the Superintendent, 1898-1978”, and “District and School, 1881-1976”. Series 1. “County Board of Education, 1948-1975” contains records and records on microfiche created and/or utilized by the County Board of Education. This series consists of County Board of Education Meeting Minutes and Reorganization and Consolidation Records. Series 2. “Office of the Superintendent, 1898-1978” contains microfilmed copies of records that were created and/or utilized by the Office of the Superintendent. This series contains Superintendents' Secretaries’ Annual Reports, High School Normal Training Records, Teachers’ Examination Records, Record of Teachers’ Certificates, Revoked Teachers’ Certificates, Record of Schools Taught, County School Censuses, Eighth Grade Examination Records, and Teachers' Complete Records. Series 3. “District and School, 1881-1976” contains records on microfiche created and/or used by individual districts and schools. This series consists of Room Registers, Teachers’ Reports to the Superintendent, District School Censuses, Preliminary Classification Reports, and Daily Attendance Registers.
